Machame Route Kilimanjaro – 96% Success Rate Interesting Facts to know in 2022 about Hiking Mountain Kilimanjaro. Machame Route Kilimanjaro also known as “Whiskey” route, is the most popular Route used along Mountain Kilimanjaro to the summit (Uhuru).

Machame Route-Mountain Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

Machame Route is the most prominent Route to use along Mountain Kilimanjaro because of the beautiful views and habitats it offers to all those that use it. This route is also one of the cheaper routes offering easy access. The Route is also referred to as the Whiskey route hence requiring you to be tough as it is challenging as you hike through steeper trails for longer distances.

The Machame Route takes a period of six days (five nights) or seven days (six nights), on Mountain Kilimanjaro offering a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The Trek starts at the Machame Gate situated along the Southern edge of Mountain Kilimanjaro requiring you to transfer from Arusha or Moshi.

Hiking along Machame Route

The Hike using the Route begins at Kilimanjaro’s lush, fertile, montane rainforest following the lower slopes that receive some rainfall. The Trail is steep and slippery so we advise you move with trekking poles. The Route follows toward the Shira Plateau through trees and low brush in the heather zone ascending up to the Volcanic Plug, lava Tower before descending beneath the South Ice Field.

The Route is 62 km/ 37 miles and goes Eastwards through continual switchbacks and loose gravel until you reach the Crater Rim at Stella point. The Route proceeds relatively flat for an hour to the prominent Uhuru Peak at the top of Mountain Kilimanjaro then the quick descent goes till Mweka Trail.

6 Days Machame Route

Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive from Moshi to Mountain Kilimanjaro National Park Gate for a period of 50 minutes following a trail through the village of Machame on the slopes. The navigation is done along muddy and slippery routes. You reach the Machame Camp for Dinner and Overnight.

Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Wake up have breakfast then transfer on you ascent traversing the candid valley walking along a steep rocky ridge covered with heather till the ridge ends. Proceed further to the West onto a River Gorge then later to the Shire Campsite where you have Dinner and Overnight.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

Wake up have breakfast then transfer from the Shira Plateau Eastwards to a ridge then Kibo Peak. Proceed South Eastwards to the Lava Tower referred to as the Shark’s Tooth then later continue on the second junction to the Arrow Glacier at 16,000ft. Continue down wards to the Barranco Hut at 13,000ft and while here enjoy Dinner and Overnight. This Day is your acclimatization Day before you proceed to the summit the next Day.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Wake up have breakfast then proceed on a steep ridge via the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley Campsite. Leave Karanga and hit the junction that adjoins with the Mweka Trail then to the Barafu Hut. While here you have completed the South Circuit hence enjoy views of the summit i.e (Mawenzi & Kibo Peak) at different angles.

Day 5: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

Today wake up at Midnight have brief breakfast then proceed to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Proceed North West then ascend through heavy scree to the Stella point on the Crater Rim and this is the most physically and mentally challenging part of the trek. On reaching Stella Point (18,600 ft) rest as you view the stunning sunrise. Proceed through snow in an hour’s time ascent to the summit and when you reach here, you are at Uhuru peak the highest point on Mountain Kilimanjaro.

After taking photos, embark on your descent to Mweka Hut Campsite and en-route briefly stop at Barafu for Lunch. You will rest, have Dinner and Overnight at the Mweka Camp.

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Moshi

Wake up have breakfast then proceed on your descent to Mweka Park Gate for your summit Certificates. En-route at lower elevations, the trail is wet and muddy requiring you an hour to Mweka Village where you transfer from to Moshi of the Kilimanjaro International Airport to board your flight back home.
